Tips For a Private Boat Charter
Cruising a yacht, is one of the most enjoyable and relaxing holidays!
Here below you can find some tips for your dream vacation... :-)
Dressing code: Preferably, when you pack your suitcases, chose a soft sided luggage or a duffel bag.
- Many clients while travelling on a boat, carry along many suitcases. This involves extra expenses at airports, a large weight on the boat, and lots of storage space. Please kindly have in mind that as this type of holiday is spent on the sea, and most of the time is spent in a swimsuit. We suggest a casual dressing code for chartering.
- For one week charter, please consider 1-2 pairs of jeans, 3-4 pairs of shorts, a nice outfit for dining out or for formal dining on board. A sweater , a hat, sunglasses, windbreaker, sneakers, flats for the beach or sandals for the deck.
Leader of the group and itinerary: When you board on your vessel, the captain will intoduce all crew members to you. This is the time you can also introduce the whole group, as well. The group usually has a leader, who communicates with the captain for the route prefererances, and for any other general requests. This way, the captain receives the right messages from your party and there is no confusion or missunderstandings.
Every day the captain reports to you possible weather condition changes and confirms next point of calls for the day. (usually the itinerary is already discussed with the yacht broker and communicated to the boat). If you need to ask him to change the route, he is always going to be willing to do so. But please have in mind that the weather factor will always be the judge of the final route. If the weather conditons permit, you will follow your planned route exactly. If the weather does not permit you and your guests, have to be " open" to the captain's alternative route suggestions. Your safety and the boat's safety are always the first priorities for the captain!
Meals: Your chef will be advised before the trip about your food and drink preferences. The chef will make all provisions based on the completed charter questionnaire you have sent to your broker. Please let us know about any allergies that you have, or about any restricted diets you follow. Your chef will be very willing to help you with that.
If you plan to skip a meal on board, please let your chef know much in advance.
Crew gratuity: It is customary to tip your crew upon disembarkation. The tip is always at the clients' discretion. The amount for the tip, is usualy within the limits of the 5-15% of the total charter fee. The crew members are very hard working professionals, they love their job and they will always do their best to meet your expectations!
The leader of the group usually has an envelop for each crew member and hands the tips personally to them before leaving the boat. In some cases the clients give a whole amount to the captain to distribute it to his crew. The crew will accept cash or travellers ' checks. Please make sure you have enough cash on you to cover gratuities and any outstanding balance from your cruising expenses. (if any extra expenses occured)
Parties or celebrations onboard: Please kindly advise your charter broker in advance in case you wish to celebrate an event on board. This involves perhaps special requests, such flowers or special wines or special cakes etc. It is preferable to plan ahead of time and let your holiday planner ( broker) know about it. If any changes on the day of celebration, please advise your crew members in due course.
Tours- sight seeing- dining ashore: Tours and sight seeing ashore, are common activities while cruising. Please let your captain know in advance about your plans for the day. Also your broker can reserve guides in advance, in case you need to have a multilingual guide on board.
Dining some times requires reservations. If you wish your captain to make your reservations for dining, please do not hesitate to ask much in advance so he finds you a great table at your chosen restaurant your desired day.
Miscelaneous: Please make sure you bring your medication with you. Bring the right quantity and more, to be at the safe side. -Sun protection is necessary, so please bring along.
Do not forget your passport before travelling abroad and make sure you have visas for all the countries you may visit with the yacht.
