The name was given to this group of islands, because these islands are more windward to sailing ships that arrive in the area.

The group is consisted of the following islands: Martinique, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines, Grenada and Dominica.

MARTINIQUE

MARTINIQUE

It is an overseas region of France. The first European that saw the island was Columbus in 1502. The island is part of the European Community and so its currency is the Euro. The official language here is French but also Creole is spoken.

The island is known as " isle of Flowers" because it is famous for its hibiscus, bougainvilleas, and frangipani.

It is a great sailing destination. Fort-de-France is one of the safest and most beautiful Bay to be in the Caribbean. There are many other interesting places to visit in Martinique with your yacht charter, and one week can be easily spent here. Other sights to see are: Pointe du Bout , Le Marin, Le Francois, Le Robert, etc.

The island is 4.350 nautical miles away from France, 275 nautical miles from the closest South American coastline. The closest neighbouring islands are to the north: Dominica, 16 nautical miles away, Guadeloupe, 75 nautical miles away, and to the south: Saint Lucia 23 nautical miles away.

Martinique has strong tradition and culture, with a rich history of crafts and literature by renowned authors and famous poets, music and dance, lifestyle and gastronomy. As rich as the island's history is Martinique's earth, which nurtures the growth of sugar cane that gives birth to rums. These rums are considered among the best in the world. They have been awarded the prestigious French label "appellation d'origine controlle," previously reserved only for French cheeses and wines.

Rum distilleries in Martinique welcome visitors for sampling their distinguished product.

The Pitons, and its dramatic twin coastal peaks are sheltering magnificent rain forests where you can observe wild flowers like orchids, giant ferns and hear tropical birds... About 150,000 people with 60,000 living in its capital, Castries. Although it is a full independent nation, it remains a member of the British Common wealth.

ST. VINCENT & THE GRENADINES

This beautiful island, St. Vincent , is a volcanic island, and very little of the island is levelled-flat.

Its 150 sq. mile territory, is consisted of the main island of St. Vincent and the northern two thirds of a small group of islands, the Grenadines.

The island has both, French and British heritage. It has always suffered from natural disasters. The volcano erupted a couple of times, in 1902 and then in 1979. In 1980 and 1987 hurricanes compromised the 'inhabitants' agricultural plantations. Same happened in 1999 with hurricane Lenny.
